The Supreme Court ordered a fundamental rights petition, which requests a ruling that fundamental human rights were violated through the failure to implement prior plans to minimize damages caused by Cyclone Ditwah, to be called on October 30 for consideration of facts.
The order was issued when a petition filed by a lawyer from the Kandy area came up before a Supreme Court bench comprising Janak de Silva and Achala Wengappuli.
The Attorney General on behalf of the President, and members of the Cabinet of Ministers, among others, are named as respondents in the petition.
The petitioner states that despite prior warnings issued by the Department of Meteorology regarding a possible Cyclone Ditwah situation, the government failed to implement prior plans to minimize the potential damage.
