Former Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne died this morning (17) after being hospitalised with gunshot wounds, the Police Media Division announced.
The shooting occurred this morning at his private residence located on Parakrama Road, Thalahena, within the Malabe police area, the division mentioned.
The former IGP, who sustained serious injuries from the shooting, was immediately admitted to the Colombo East Base Hospital (Mulleriyawa), where he passed away, the Police Media Division stated.
Malabe Police immediately commenced investigations into the incident, and the body of the deceased former IGP is currently placed at the Colombo East Base Hospital for the post-mortem examination.
Further extensive investigations regarding the death will be conducted jointly by the Western Province South Crimes Division and the Malabe Police Station, the statement further noted.
The 63-year-old former IGP C.D. Wickramaratne served as the 35th Inspector General of the Sri Lanka Police, holding the office from 27 November 2020 until 23 November 2023.
