A six-year-old girl died on the spot, run over by a private passenger bus at the Godauda Lunukalapuwa junction on the Dikwella-Matara-Kataragama main road, according to Dikwella Police.
The deceased was identified as Hakmana Kankanamge Chanudi Senara, a six-year-old girl residing in the Lunukalapuwa area and studying in Grade One at Dikwella North Maha Vidyalaya.
The incident happened this morning (21) when the girl attempted to board a Matara-Middeniya bus to go to Dikwella town with her mother and pre-school-attending brother.
According to the statement given by the girlchild's mother, she had boarded the bus first with her son, and as the girl was boarding, the bus has moved forward.
Following the incident, the bus driver has abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.
After conducting investigations, Dikwella Inquirer into Sudden Deaths Jayantha Samarasinghe ordered the police to take the body to the Matara Hospital for an autopsy.
Dikwella Police are conducting further investigations.
