Labour Commissioner General requests report on Homagama factory fire

Deputy Labour Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe stated that directives were issued to the Labour Commissioner General to investigate the fire that erupted at a helmet factory in the Homagama-Katuwana Industrial Zone, which killed five workers.

The Police is also continuing with an investigation into the incident.

Five individuals died in a fire that broke out yesterday morning(21) at a helmet manufacturing factory in the Katuwana Industrial Zone, Homagama.

An officer from the Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Fire Brigade stated that their bodies were burnt beyond recognition.

Victims' bodies are currently at the Homagama Base Hospital.

Police suspect that an electrical leak caused the fire, based on the preliminary investigations.

A woman who inhaled smoke was admitted to the same hospital.

It was revealed that one of the individuals who died in the fire served as an inspector at the factory for about 20 years, whilst the other four deceased have started the job in the factory a few months ago.
