Over 300 smart mobile phones valued at over 100 million rupees seized yesterday (22) have been discovered hidden inside a secret storehouse constructed within a shopping complex in Kollupitiya, the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Striking Unit revealed.
Police stated that at the time of the raid, the owner attempted to offer 10 million rupees as a bribe to police officers.
The suspect, a 52-year-old resident of Dehiwala, was arrested there.
The unit added that the stock of mobile phones seized by police were phones illegally imported into the country without paying customs duties.
Following information received by Inspector of Police Indika Weerasinghe, OIC of the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Striking Unit, this raid was carried out in a shop located in the first floor of a famous shopping complex in Kollupitiya.
Information revealed that similar stocks of mobile phones were meticulously imported into the country from time to time by the same person, presenting forged documents through the airport, and later sent to showrooms owned by him located in various areas to be sold.
