Agriculture Ministry considers early Maha Season start

The Agriculture Ministry is considering beginning Maha season cultivation two weeks earlier than the usual schedule as a measure to address potential challenges arising from the forecast El Niño conditions, according to a local media outlet.

Deputy Agriculture Minister Namal Karunarathne said that relevant authorities have identified the early commencement of cultivation as a suitable strategy and are currently holding discussions with other stakeholders before making a final decision.

He noted that implementing the plan would require ensuring the timely availability of essential resources, including fertiliser and water. Discussions are therefore underway with relevant departments and institutions to arrange the early provision of these facilities.

The Deputy Minister also said farmers may be encouraged to cultivate short-duration rice varieties during the upcoming Maha season, as the season traditionally involves growing paddy varieties with longer maturity periods.

Authorities are consulting agricultural experts to determine the most suitable rice varieties considering the expected weather conditions.

The move follows forecasts from the Meteorology Department indicating the possible influence of El Niño, with predictions of both drought and flood conditions in the coming months.

The Government is assessing cultivation strategies based on these climate projections.
