Indian High Commission restores free visas for Sri Lankan pilgrims

Facilitating timely and smooth issuance of visas to all Sri Lankans remains standing policy, according to a press note issued by the High Commission of India in Colombo. Sri Lanka stands as one of many countries whose citizens can avail of the E-visa facility for travel to India, while those choosing to apply at the High Commission must apply online and submit applications to Indian Consular Application Centres located in Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna, Hambantota, and Batticaloa.

Visa issuance is facilitated and executed swiftly for Sri Lankans travelling to India for pilgrimage, including to Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Wherever possible, when applications receive recommendations from the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious & Cultural Affairs, visas are issued on a Gratis basis for groups of 10 pilgrims and above. Due to a change in the visa outsourcing agency working for the High Commission, this practice experienced temporary discontinuation for a brief period.

Subsequent to selecting the new service provider, which commenced operations from 07 July 2026, the practice of issuing Gratis visas for Sri Lankan pilgrims is being reintroduced. Requests should be forwarded by the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious & Cultural Affairs, following previous practice. Applications can be submitted in groups of 10 or more, with applicants required to visit ICAC as a group or individually for biometric capture, representing a mandatory requirement under new Government of India regulations applicable to individuals aged between 12 and 70.

A special and expedited process is instituted for senior citizens visiting ICAC for biometrics to minimise waiting times. Biometric capture ensures smooth and convenient passage through Indian Immigration upon arrival in India.

No visa fee exists for Sri Lankan pilgrims whose applications are submitted through indicated channels, meaning no question of a visa fee change arises. Applicants are required to pay a visa service fee of LKR 1,855 to ICAC for processing services.
