Four provinces face severe drought risks

Severe drought conditions may affect the Northern, North Central, Uva, and Eastern Provinces as well as the Hambantota District due to the ongoing El Niño phenomenon, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Met Department Director General Ajith Wijeweera stated that a severe drought could emerge next month if the current pattern develops into an extreme El Niño phase. Environmental issues such as reduced rainfall, drying water sources, and rising temperatures might occur during the coming year.

Global health authorities announced that the probability of an extremely strong El Niño event stands at 81 percent.

The Department of Meteorology advises the public to use water and electricity sparingly, monitor health conditions, and prepare in advance to minimise impacts on livelihoods and the environment.

Additionally, the department noted that hot weather conditions will continue to affect the Eastern Province alongside the Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Polonnaruwa, and Monaragala Districts.

Meanwhile, a weather bulletin issued this morning indicates that rainfall activity is expected to increase slightly in the southwestern part of the country over next few days.

Strong winds ranging between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour may develop over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern and North Central Provinces, and the Hambantota, Trincomalee, and Puttalam Districts.
