The Committee on Public Finance recently convened, chaired by Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva to evaluate the first annual report for 2025 issued by the Public Debt Management Office.
Lawmakers examined the ramifications of escalating public debt stocks, interest rate fluctuations, and currency depreciation on debt servicing costs throughout 2025.
The session also addressed the operational coordination required between the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Finance.
Established under specific legislative provisions to centralise oversight, the Public Debt Management Office handles overarching debt strategy formulation and parliamentary reporting.
Discussions further highlighted staffing constraints within the institution and explored specialised capacity-building initiatives supported by the International Monetary Fund.
Officials received instructions to deliver a comprehensive training needs assessment report within a fortnight to address technical skill gaps.
Additional deliberations centered on state enterprise guarantees, debt restructuring progress, and strategies to enhance administrative transparency.
