Students accomodated at the ground floor of the 'Sarasavi Madura' hostel of the University of Peradeniya were immediately evacuated by the university administration.
The university administration took the step considering the risk of rising water levels in the Mahaweli River basin due to heavy rainfall.
Additionally, a special notice was issued by the University of Peradeniya administration advising other students staying in hostels and within the university premises to remain highly vigilant regarding the situation.
The Disaster Management Centre announced today to remain vigilant as a risk exists for several low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River basin to be submerged if rains continue in the area.
