Foreign employment departures increase in July

Sri Lankans migrating for foreign employment has increased by 4.84 percent in July compared to June this year, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment stated.

Accordingly, a group of 25,622 Lankans departed overseas for employment in July 2026, which the bureau stated is the highest amount reported in a single month during this year.

The amount of Sri Lankans who departed for foreign employment in June this year is 24,440.

A high interest of Sri Lankans turning to foreign employment is shown this year according to memorandums of understanding arrived at by the Sri Lankan government with countries such as Israel, South Korea, and Japan.

Accordingly, 2,521 persons for Israeli jobs, 1,618 persons for South Korean jobs, and 79 persons for Japanese jobs departed up to now, the Bureau of Foreign Employment stated.

In addition, awarding air tickets to 14 youths who received employment in Japan took place at the bureau on the (03) past.

Job opportunities in manufacturing, construction, nursing, and agricultural sectors in Japan were received by this group.

The highest income for the economy of this country is received from money remitted by overseas workers, and during the 6 month period from January to June this year, a sum of USD 4.6 billion was remitted to this country by overseas Sri Lankan workers, the Bureau of Foreign Employment stated.

The amount of remittances received by this country during July was not calculated by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka as yet, and considering the amount of remittances received in past months, receiving an amount of remittances between USD 540 million and 570 million during July can be expected, the Bureau of Foreign Employment stated.
