Sri Lanka is ready to implement several new transport infrastructure projects in the country over the next two to three years, Deputy Minister of Transport Prasanna Gunasena states.
He stated this in a statement in parliament.
He mentioned that these projects will be implemented following the review of capital expenditure, economic outcomes, and environmental impacts in line with the national development plan.
Feasibility studies and evidence-based reports required to expand sectors such as the Railway Department were obtained, the Deputy Minister said.
He also stated that, particularly under the 2026 budget, 3,300 million rupees were allocated for the process of purchasing five new diesel multiple units (DMUs) and for digitising the railway service.
In addition, an amount between 320 and 350 million dollars was estimated to reconstruct railway lines damaged by Cyclone Ditwa, and the feasibility study report on extending the Kelani Valley railway line up to Ratnapura is currently expected by December this year, the Minister further mentioned.
