Prison Officer detained over alleged drug supply to prison

Seven-day detention orders were obtained to further question two individuals, including a prison guard, belonging to a gang engaged in a racket of supplying drug stocks into the Borella Magazine Prison, the Mount Lavinia Division Crimes Investigation Bureau states.

The Mount Lavinia Division Crimes Investigation Bureau notified the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court regarding this today (12).

Accordingly, permission was granted to detain and question the suspects for a period of 7 days at the Mount Lavinia Division Crimes Investigation Bureau.

The two individuals for whom detention orders were granted by the court are Jayasekara Kankanamge Rukman Chandana Jayasekara (52), a prison guard residing in Rathugewatta, Nagahilla, Beliatta, and Sangapala Arachchige Gayan Chinthaka Senanayake (32), a resident of Vaidya Road, Dehiwala.

100 grams of ice drugs and 20 grams of heroin with a value exceeding two million rupees were taken into police custody along with the suspects.

During questioning conducted after arresting the suspect residing in Vaidya Road, Dehiwala with drugs in the Watarappala area, Mount Lavinia, he stated that he obtained the drug parcel through a WhatsApp location method as directed by a person serving a prison sentence in the Magazine Prison.

The suspect disclosed that the drug parcel was scheduled to be given to another person on Vanatha Road, Borella upon the instructions of the inmate being held in prison, and that he possessed the telephone number of that person as well.

Accordingly, a team including the Officer-in-Charge of the Mount Lavinia Division Crimes Investigation Bureau, Chief Inspector Nilantha Gamage, implemented a secret plan to arrest the person and took steps to station their officers.

Police mentioned that when a person dressed in prison sports attire approached the arrested suspect and accepted the parcel containing the drugs, officers waiting around arrested the suspect. Prison sources mention that the arrested guard is a person who came for service at the prison since last January, and worked in the Welikada Prison before that.
