Sri Lanka and Japan discuss national AI data centre establishment

Sri Lanka and Japan explore the establishment of a National AI Data Centre and local production of digital TV Set-Top Boxes as part of efforts to deepen cooperation in digital transformation and artificial intelligence.

The proposals were discussed between Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne and a delegation led by JICA Senior Vice President Shohei Hara at the Ministry of Digital Economy.

The discussions centred on accelerating the digital television project and resolving practical issues affecting implementation.

Local production of Set-Top Boxes would strengthen domestic industries and reduce Sri Lanka’s reliance on imports.

The two sides examined AI capacity-building programmes, training, developing AI solutions suited to Sri Lanka, and sharing international technical expertise and best practices.

The Ministry of Digital Economy commended JICA’s technical assistance and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the projects while further strengthening Sri Lanka-Japan relations.
