Namal questions judicial independence over minister's jail remarks

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna National Organiser and Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa raised surprise questioning how can a minister could claim that he will be sent to prison within days when a court verdict has not yet been delivered.

Speaking at a public gathering in Manampitiya, Polonnaruwa on August 17, Rajapaksa expressed concern over recent comments made by an unnamed Cabinet member regarding his ongoing legal proceedings.

He stated that a minister had publicly announced his imminent imprisonment despite the court having not yet set a date to issue its ruling. Questioning the situation, the parliamentarian asked whether a minister declaring an upcoming prison sentence meant politicians were now authoring judicial judgments rather than allowing the legal system to take its course.

Rajapaksa warned that such public declarations raise serious doubts over the independence of the judiciary and suggest attempts by political figures to influence ongoing court cases. He urged the government to uphold judicial neutrality and ensure courts are permitted to deliver rulings free from political interference.

The parliamentarian further noted that wider apprehensions regarding the erosion of judicial independence are currently being voiced by Sri Lanka’s legal community as well as international bodies.

These comments were made during a broader critique of the administration’s governance, where Rajapaksa condemned the treatment of political opponents and other public groups, though he refrained from naming the specific minister involved.
