Six priorities to deepen Sri Lanka–India partnership

High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to India Mahishini Colonne addressed the 66th course of the National Defence College of India on bilateral relations, covering determinants, status, opportunities, challenges, and the way forward.

122 senior officers from Indian armed forces, civil services, and police, alongside forty-one foreign officers including representatives from Sri Lanka, attended the session.

The address examined bilateral ties through history, geography, sovereignty, security, economics, connectivity, and people-to-people relations while drawing on the college motto of wisdom is strength.

Recent bilateral momentum included the state visit of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in December 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit in April 2025, an inaugural visit by an Indian vice president in April 2026, and emergency assistance following Cyclone Ditwah.

Strategic discussions emphasised mutual security interests alongside the safeguarding of Sri Lanka's sovereignty and strategic autonomy, recalling Indian support during the 2022 economic crisis.

The relationship was described as a partnership between unequal states rather than unequal interests, sharing fundamental goals of regional peace and security.

Remarks spanned trade, investment, energy, defence, maritime cooperation, digital links, and the Colombo Security Conclave, noting a recent survey indicating 79% of Sri Lankans hold favorable views of India.

Six priorities for the future include building mutual trust, shared prosperity, accelerated connectivity, integrated maritime security, people investments, and regional collaboration.

The envoy concluded by meeting officers scheduled for an upcoming study tour to Sri Lanka.
