An elderly female giraffe housed at the Dehiwala National Zoo has passed away.
The Department of National Zoological Gardens stated that the animal was nearly thirty years of age at the time of her death.
While the typical lifespan of a giraffe is approximately twenty to twenty-five years, the department noted that no special illness had been reported prior to its death.
As this was the only giraffe at the Dehiwala National Zoo, Director General of the Department of National Zoological Gardens, Veterinary Surgeon Chandana Rajapaksa, stated that a pair of giraffes from Kenya is scheduled to be brought to the country within the next two months.
