An eighteen-year-old youth in possession of a locally manufactured 'Galkatas' type firearm capable of firing twelve-bore ammunition has been arrested by the Ambalantota Police.
A team of officers from the Ambalantota Police Crime Investigation Division had subjected the youth, who was behaving suspiciously, to an inspection during a search operation conducted in the area near the Karambagalmulla Safari Park in Ambalantota.
During the check, a photograph of a firearm was observed on his mobile phone, and police stated that he was questioned regarding it.
Information about the firearm was subsequently uncovered during those interrogations.
Following information provided by the suspect, the relevant firearm, which had been concealed inside a wardrobe at his home located in Weniwelara, Suriyawewa, was taken into police custody.
The arrested suspect is a resident of Weniwelara in Suriyawewa.
While the Ambalantota Police are conducting further investigations into how the suspect obtained the firearm and the reason for keeping it in his possession, the suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Hambantota Magistrate's Court.
