The Northern Naval Command yesterday (21) commenced the supply of drinking water to horses, which attract numerous local and foreign tourists, on Delft Island in Jaffna, who were affected by the severe dry weather conditions.
Due to the drying up of water sources caused by the severe dry weather conditions prevailing in the Northern Province, wild animals including horses living in the environment associated with Delft Island in the Jaffna District were severely affected by the shortage of drinking water.
Accordingly, under the supervision of the Commander of the Northern Naval Command, this programme initiated by the Sri Lanka Navy Ship 'Vasaba' commenced supplying drinking water to the pony horse population living in the Vellai area in the western part of the island.
Furthermore, to meet the clean drinking water requirements of the people in the Jaffna District, the Sri Lanka Navy continuously provides clean drinking water to the public daily through community reverse osmosis water purification plants established by the Navy covering the islands.
