Villagers protest over water project in Thirappane

A tense situation arose as Thirappane villagers arrived at the Talawa Pradeshiya Sabha and engaged in a protest.

They stated that although the water project in Thirappane village was taken over by the Talawa Pradeshiya Sabha, which is controlled by the National People's Power, no facilities were provided to the village.

Accordingly, they requested that the relevant water project be handed back to the village society, and a tense situation occurred when the Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha, Karunadasa Dissanayake, failed to meet them when they attempted to hand over the relevant letter.

Later, the police intervened and controlled the group, and six villagers were given the opportunity to hold discussions with the Chairman.

The villagers dispersed after the Chairman promised to hand back the water project to the village society within a month based on the agreement reached there.

Meanwhile, residents of Navalapitiya - Selambridge, Kithulkoteya, Labuwelkotuwa, Manyokkawatta, and Imbulpitiya, who were affected by the overflowing of the Mahaweli River following the recent heavy rains, arrived at the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat to discuss their issues.

However, they engaged in a protest in front of the Divisional Secretariat, stating that the Divisional Secretary refused to hold discussions with them.

The Hiru reporter stated that the Divisional Secretary later granted them a discussion after the Navalapitiya Police OIC intervened.
