Showers may occur from time to time today in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and North Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Fairly heavy showers above 75 millimetres can be expected at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts.
It is stated that showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 pm.
Mainly dry weather prevails in the rest of the island.
The statement notes that fairly strong winds of about 40 to 50 kilometres per hour can occur from time to time on the western slopes of the central hills, in the Northern, North Central, and North Western provinces, and in the Trincomalee, Monaragala, Hambantota, and Matale districts.
The department requests the public to take necessary steps to minimise damages caused by temporary strong winds and lightning that may accompany thundershowers.
Meanwhile, with the apparent southward relative motion of the sun, it will be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka from today until September 7.
The department further states that accordingly, the sun will be directly overhead today at 12:11 pm over the Kokkuvil, Nallur, Kodikamam, and Nagar Kovil areas.
