The Port of Colombo climbed from 26th to the top 20 major container ports globally, significantly boosting the maritime ambitions of Sri Lanka according to data from research firm Alphaliner cited by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
Handling 4.44 million twenty-foot equivalent units during the first half of 2026, the port recorded an 11.9 percent increase in container volumes compared to 3.97 million units handled in the same period of 2025.
Officials view the milestone as a key step in strengthening the position of Sri Lanka within the international shipping sector, with expected investments in logistics and capacity set to support future expansion as a regional trade gateway.
The performance highlights the growing importance of Colombo as a central transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean, linking crucial trade routes across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe as authorities seek to secure a larger market share.
