Indictments filed against S.M. Chandrasena in corruption case

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (28) that indictments were filed in the High Court against former Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Minister of Special Projects S.M. Chandrasena, who was released on bail regarding a corruption charge.

The Bribery Commission informed the court when the case related to the incident was called.

Further submitting facts to the court, the Bribery Commission stated that since indictments were already filed against this suspect in the High Court, the court proceedings in this court would be concluded.

Considering the presented facts, the Magistrate ordered the suspect to appear in the High Court on the designated date.

The suspect appeared in open court today (28).

Former Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Minister of Special Projects S.M. Chandrasena was arrested by the Bribery Commission on 4 July and released on bail on charges of causing a loss to the government by pressuring officers including the Planning Director of the District Secretariat to distribute miaze, imported at a cost of Rs. 25 million by the government in 2014 to be provided at a concessionary price to poor farmers in the Anuradhapura district, through his political associates with the intention of gaining advantage for the 2015 presidential election.
