Lanka Sugar Company to discuss with Labour Department over Sevanagala factory closure

Lanka Sugar Company has stated that it expects to hold a discussion with the Department of Labour tomorrow (31) and subsequently conduct talks with the employees of the Sevanagala factory.

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo today, Chief Executive Officer D. Udayakumar stated that the company plans to transport the harvested sugarcane to the Pelwatte factory to carry out production work.

The management of the Sevanagala Sugar Factory recently decided to temporarily close the facility until further notice. This decision was taken after a group of employees abstained from work since the 25th, preventing the commencement of production activities.

It was reported that normal operations and production activities have been severely disrupted due to the ongoing situation.

The management further stated that the disruption has adversely affected the financial standing of the company, leading to the decision to maintain only essential services at the factory.
