Nuwara Eliya district allocated Rs. 997 million for Praja Shakthi development projects

The Rural Development Bureau and the Praja Shakthi National Secretariat, operating under the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, have rolled out the Praja Shakthi national poverty eradication initiative.

Backed by a 25 billion rupee allocation from the 2026 Budget, the programme aims to implement at least one development project in every Grama Niladhari division across Sri Lanka.

Nationwide, roughly 15,646 rural development projects worth 22.425 billion rupees have been initiated, with 53.2 percent focused on livelihood development and 46.8 percent dedicated to infrastructure.

During a progress review meeting at the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat auditorium, chaired by Minister Dr. Upali Pannila, officials revealed that 786 projects are planned for the Nuwara Eliya District with an estimated value of 997.84 million rupees.

This comprises 263 livelihood development projects worth 296.19 million rupees and 286 infrastructure projects valued at 543.22 million rupees.

Furthermore, 182.5 million rupees has been allocated for 2026 to supply technical equipment and facilities to Praja Shakthi units at district and divisional levels, following a 365 million rupee allocation in 2025.

Minister Pannila urged officials to expedite all development works for prompt public handover while strictly maintaining fiscal discipline to secure maximum benefits for citizens.
