New uniform for Sri Lanka Police by mid-2027

Sri Lanka Police will receive a new uniform by the middle of 2027 as part of broader modernization efforts, according to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Discussions regarding the change took place with the Inspector General of Police to better align the attire with modern service needs. The Inspector General received instructions to select a professional fashion design company to craft the new uniform.

The updated design will hold essential gear for modern officers, including body cameras, batons, flashlights, and handcuffs. President Dissanayake stated that the country needs to rebuild the police force with a uniform built for the modern era.

This uniform update serves as one component of a larger transformation for Sri Lanka Police. The overhaul targets improvements in human resources, technology, infrastructure, training, and overall working conditions.

Officers will gain access to a risk allowance starting in January, alongside solutions to resolve long-standing promotion issues. To fix staff shortages that currently force some officers into 12 to 18-hour shifts, the government approved the recruitment of 10,000 personnel.

Operational upgrades include new single cabs and motorcycles, modernized police facilities, and dedicated funding for new Criminal Investigation Department and Police Headquarters buildings.

President Dissanayake emphasized that the main goal centers on transforming Sri Lanka Police into a respected, modern service fully equipped with personnel, technology, and infrastructure.
