Sajith proposes UNFPA-backed programmes on women’s rights

A meeting between Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa and UNFPA Sri Lanka Representative Phuntsho Wangyel took place today (05) at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Colombo.

During the meeting, attention was drawn by both parties to several matters, including protecting the rights of women and girls, improving women's health, and empowering the women's economy.

Opinions were exchanged here, especially regarding reproductive health and menstrual health, eliminating gender-based violence and discrimination, increasing women's participation in the workforce, as well as ensuring gender-responsive policy formulation.

The Leader of the Opposition emphasised the need to further strengthen the recognition and protection of the rights of women, girls, and children within the constitutional framework of Sri Lanka.

The Leader of the Opposition also pointed out the importance of raising awareness regarding the rights of women and girls to communities across the country, without limiting it only to Parliament.

Furthermore, Sajith Premadasa suggested holding regular knowledge-sharing programmes with UNFPA experts to educate civil society on matters such as women's health, empowerment, gender equality, violence, and discrimination.

Accepting the proposal presented by the Leader of the Opposition, the UNFPA Sri Lanka Representative stated that the UNFPA is ready to provide the necessary technical support, expertise, and international best practices for this initiative.
