Installation of AI technology in long-distance buses begins in Colombo

Installation of technical equipment has begun under a project to introduce Artificial Intelligence technology to long-distance passenger buses. Coordinated by the National Council for Road Safety, the installation of these technical devices on private buses belonging to the National Transport Commission commenced at Bastian Mawatha in Colombo.

The project aims to ensure the safety of both passengers and drivers. In the initial phase, the equipment will be fitted to 10 buses, and following an evaluation of their performance, the AI technology is scheduled to be rolled out across all buses.

The system will monitor the driver and internal conditions of the bus from the start of a trip until its completion. If an unsafe action occurs, such as failing to wear a seat belt, showing signs of driver fatigue, or using a mobile phone while driving, the safety device will immediately issue a voice message so that the unsafe situation can be rectified.

The project is being implemented under the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development.
