31 Sathosa outlets closed between 2024 and 2025

Thirty-one Sathosa outlets were closed down between January 2024 and October 2025, Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Co-operative Development Deputy Minister R. M. Jayawardena stated.

The disclosure came in response to an oral query raised by Opposition Member of Parliament Chanaka Madugoda in Parliament today.

Jayawardena added that 424 Sathosa outlets operated islandwide as of 17 August 2026.

Opposition Member of Parliament Chanaka Madugoda noted that a shortage of several essential items currently affects Sathosa outlets.

Plans are underway to establish district-level storage warehouses across the island, with one facility per district to streamline distribution, imports, and wholesale supply to offer goods at lower prices than other institutions, the Deputy Minister stated in response.

The first phase of the program will launch next month with the opening of the Matara wholesale warehouse, Jayawardena added.
