Coconut Cultivation Board launches subsidy programme to protect yield against dry weather

The Coconut Cultivation Board has launched a special Rs.2.5 billion subsidy programme aimed at protecting existing harvests and increasing overall production amid prevailing dry weather conditions across the island.

Chairman of the Coconut Cultivation Board, Dr Sunimal Jayakody, stated that the initiative is intended to encourage coconut growers, rehabilitate land, and boost crop yields. He noted that while high temperatures have not yet severely impacted coconut cultivation, the crop could be affected if El Niño weather conditions intensify. The board is currently monitoring climate conditions and holding discussions with relevant stakeholders.

Under the scheme, special priority will be given to coconut plantations in key producing districts, including Gampaha, Kurunegala, Kuliyapitiya, and Puttalam, while also extending support to other districts across the country. Eligible coconut growers will be provided with a subsidy of Rs.50,000 per acre, up to a maximum of five acres, to set up water supply infrastructure on their lands.

In addition, the board will provide Rs.200 per coconut tree to support water conservation initiatives on plantations. Farmers can also access financial assistance through the Kapruka Loan Scheme operated by the Coconut Cultivation Board.

Urging growers to apply for the available subsidies to safeguard their crops and sustain production levels, Dr Jayakody further revealed that national coconut yields recorded a 24% increase during the first six months of this year.
