Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) launched its "people's struggle for the nation's self-respect" from the historic city of Anuradhapura on Saturday (12), emphasising that internal enemies who betray the country for personal gain pose a greater danger than external threats.
In a message shared following the party's mass rally in Anuradhapura, home to the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, the former President drew parallels between the present national situation and the history of the Anuradhapura Kingdom, describing it as a legacy of civilisation, invasions, resistance, betrayals, collapse, and resurgence.
He stressed that every citizen must foster a deep love and sense of belonging for their motherland, while criticising those who justify betrayal and spread falsehoods in society.
Mahinda Rajapaksa affirmed that the primary objective of the SLPP is to rebuild an era where citizens live happily and securely, while preserving the country's culture, identity, and native heritage alongside economic development.
He added that he had previously secured and built the motherland with the support and strength of the public.
Extending his gratitude to the Buddhist Clergy, clergy of other faiths, political colleagues, new youth political entrants, and party organisers, the former leader thanked the residents of the Rajarata region and supporters from across the island for attending the rally in large numbers despite severe heat and challenging conditions.
