The European Union will enforce new rules from the 18th of February 2027 mandating that portable batteries in devices like smartphones and tablets must be easily removable and replaceable by consumers throughout the product’s lifetime.
While batteries are not required to simply pop out by hand, consumers must be able to swap them using standard, commercially available tools. Manufacturers are strictly forbidden from requiring heat, solvents, or proprietary tools, though specialised equipment may be used if included free with the device.
Companies will also be required to publish permanent online instructions and safety guidelines detailing the replacement process.
Furthermore, replacement batteries must remain available as spare parts for at least five years after a model's final unit goes on sale.
The regulation also clamps down on software restrictions designed to disable compatible replacement batteries.
Limited exceptions will be granted only where user battery removal poses genuine safety hazards or where a permanent power link is vital for safety or data integrity.
The legislation forms part of the European Union's broader strategy to boost battery sustainability, lengthen product lifespans, and curb electronic waste across the bloc.
