Police clarify seat belt rules for children, shorter passengers

For years, buckling up has been the golden rule of the road. But what happens when the safety strap meant to protect you becomes a hazard itself?

Traffic Police DIG U.P.J. Senadheera has stepped forward to clear the air on a crucial safety exemption that has left many motorists scratching their heads. Under a gazette notification issued on June 25, 2025, children under twelve and individuals standing under four-and-a-half feet tall are officially excused from standard seat belt requirements.

The reasoning is straightforward, yet often overlooked. For passengers of shorter stature, a traditional adult seat belt rests dangerously across the neck instead of crossing the chest and hips. In the event of a sudden stop or collision, that misplaced strap can transform from a safety device into a serious injury risk.

Of course, exemption does not mean a free pass to ride unprotected. Officials are strongly advising drivers and guardians to substitute standard restraints with proper alternatives, such as specially designed lap belts, to ensure everyone on board stays secure.

Ultimately, road safety shouldn't begin and end with flashing police lights. Authorities are urging drivers and passengers to take personal accountability for their well-being, proving that common sense remains the best safety gear on any journey.
