“Sri Lanka on course for another record export year in 2026”

Sri Lanka's exports are on an upward trajectory and, if the current momentum continues, the country is well positioned to achieve another record year for exports in 2026, with apparel, ICT/BPM, tea, coconut products, rubber products and boat and ship building expected to remain the key contributors to export earnings.

This was stated by National Chamber of Exporters (NCE) Chairman Indhra Kaushal Rajapaksa at the launch of the 34th NCE Export Awards yesterday.

He revealed that Sri Lanka's total export earnings exceeded US$ 7.3 billion during the first five months of 2026, reflecting the resilience and competitiveness of the country's export sector.

Rajapaksa said the rubber industry continues to be one of Sri Lanka's most important export sectors, particularly through value added rubber products, while the boat and ship building industry remains a niche, high value export segment with strong growth potential.

Industry stakeholders expect the boat and ship building sector to continue expanding through greater value addition and increased penetration into premium international markets, he added.

Building on this momentum, the Government of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Export Development Board have set an ambitious national target of approximately US$ 19 billion in total export earnings for 2026.

"This is an ambitious yet achievable target. Reaching it will require stronger collaboration between the Government, export promotion agencies, industry associations such as the NCE and, above all, the dedication and innovation of our exporters," Rajapaksa said.

He also stressed that greater assistance from the Government would be needed to help exporters achieve the national export target.

Secretary General/Chief Executive Officer of the NCE, Shiham Marikar, said the Chamber has made several representations to the Government to create a more business-friendly environment for exporters.

Chairman Rajapaksa said the NCE Export Awards play an even more significant role in recognising excellence and encouraging exporters to reach higher standards.

"As we launch the 34th NCE Export Awards, I invite every exporter to seize this opportunity to showcase your achievements and be recognised among the very best in Sri Lanka," he said.

He also invited both NCE members and non-members to participate in this year's competition.

The 34th NCE Export Awards ceremony will be held on December 11, 2026, at the Shangri-La Colombo. ExPack Corrugation Cartons will be the main sponsor this year as well. (Shirajiv S.)
