Vehicle registrations dip in June

Sri Lankan vehicle registrations moderated in July, with total registrations falling to 53,221 units from 58,151 in June, according to the latest industry data, said J.B. Securities.

"The decline was broad-based, with lower registrations recorded across SUVs and crossovers, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, pickups and tractors. Passenger vehicles, however, remained relatively resilient, while several commercial vehicle categories recorded improvements."

Motor car registrations declined to 3,654 units in July from 3,929 units in June, with both brand-new and pre-owned vehicle registrations recording a moderation.

In contrast, registrations of brand-new cars increased modestly to 1,062 units in July, up from 998 units a month earlier. BYD continued to strengthen its dominance of the new-car market, accounting for 800 registrations during the month. 

Its Atto 1 was the best-performing model with 612 registrations, followed by the Dolphin Dynamic with 180 units.

Other brands recorded significantly smaller volumes. BAW registered 63 E7 units, while Wuling recorded 53 registrations. Perodua registered 27 vehicles, comprising 16 Bezzas and 11 Axias.

Small cars continued to dominate the brand-new passenger vehicle market, accounting for 97.6% of all new motor car registrations in July, underscoring the strong preference for more affordable vehicles.

Meanwhile, financing remained subdued, with the financing share at 42.8%, broadly unchanged from recent months. The relatively low financing penetration raises questions over how much of the recorded registration activity represents actual end-customer deliveries.

Industry data suggests that a meaningful portion of registrations could instead reflect dealer inventory registrations, as dealers seek to meet the 90-day registration deadline and avoid associated penalties.

 As a result, while the increase in brand-new car registrations provides some indication of improving market activity, July's registration figures should be interpreted with caution when assessing underlying consumer demand.
