‘Grinch’ sequel in the works with Jim Carrey and Ron Howard returning

A follow-up to the 2000 holiday hit "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" enters development at Universal and Imagine Entertainment. Jim Carrey negotiates to reprise his leading role, with Ron Howard anticipated to return as director and Brian Grazer producing.

Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel handle the screenplay for the project, though talks remain ongoing. The screenwriters previously collaborated on "The Cat in the Hat" and are veterans of the television comedy series "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

The potential sequel follows the massive commercial success of the original film, which earned over $350 million globally. Jim Carrey, who features as Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming "Sonic the Hedgehog 4," previously expressed interest in a return to Whoville if modern motion-capture technology removes the need for the exhausting prosthetic makeup routine required during the original production.

The original live-action feature inspired a successful 2018 animated adaptation by Illumination Entertainment. Universal executives Britt Hennemuth and Christina Hoffrogge manage development alongside Susan Brandt of Dr. Seuss Enterprises.
