Nasser Hussain labels Chamari Athapaththu inspirational despite her self-criticism

Former England captain Nasser Hussain described Sri Lankan women's cricket captain Chamari Athapaththu as an inspirational figure whose impact extends far beyond winning matches.

Athapaththu previously took the blame for Sri Lanka's loss to the West Indies, candidly stating that she felt she failed as a captain. Responding to a question about her statement during a recent interview, Hussain noted that defining failure depends on perspective.

Whilst acknowledging that cricket revolves around winning, he emphasised that a larger picture exists.

Hussain explained that although Athapaththu feels she failed because she did not lead her side to knockout games, semi-finals, and finals, her ability to inspire remains her true legacy.

He recalled a visit to Sri Lanka the previous year to film a feature, where he witnessed thousands of young women and girls playing cricket solely because of Athapaththu.

Hussain hailed her as a role model and a legend who maintained remarkable consistency over the years.

According to Hussain, Athapaththu will likely only realise her full importance to Sri Lankan cricket a decade after her retirement, when a young Sri Lankan woman scoring a century credits her as the reason for taking up the sport.

Hussain concluded that such an impact represents inspiration rather than failure.
