Uruguay federation cancels charter flight after winless World Cup exit

The Uruguayan football team’s disastrous World Cup campaign culminated in a reportedly final logistical embarrassment as the country’s football association cancelled the squad’s dedicated charter flight. Rather than returning home together as a unit from their training base in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, the players were forced to fend for themselves on various commercial flights, arriving in Montevideo scattered and disconnected.

This sudden decision to scrap the charter arrangement has drawn significant attention, serving as a bitter final chapter to an already dismal exit from North America. The team, which arrived as the 16th-ranked side in the world, failed to progress past the group stage, managing only two draws and a final defeat against Spain.

Uruguay captain Jose Maria Gimenez, who did not feature in any of the matches, expressed the team’s collective despair. He told the Uruguayan broadcast company Tenfield that the pain is immense and the reality they must face is incredibly difficult, offering apologies to the nation for failing to meet expectations.

Coach Marcelo Bielsa, reflecting on his three-year tenure following the loss to Spain, offered a stark assessment of his impact. He admitted that, in the absence of tangible results, he leaves behind nothing for the country’s football landscape, describing his time with the team as a tenure that concluded without a lasting contribution.
