The Registration of Persons Department has decided to introduce 12 digit National Identity Cards from the 1st of January.
The highlight will be the removal of the English letter from the NIC.
The first four digits of the NIC will contain the year of birth while a naught will be included before the final four digits.
Accordingly the new change will initially come into effect from the 1st of January for those obtaining new IDs or NICs that are being renewed.
