Dr. Chandima Jeewandara of the Department of Anthropology and Molecular Studies at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has taken to Twitter to point out the rapid spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant in Sri Lankan society.
Dr. Jeewandara added to this Twitter message a diagram showing the distribution of the Delta variant in the month of July, adding that the COVID-19 Delta variant is currently spreading in the city of Colombo at an alarming rate.
During the first week of July, more than 75% of COVID-19 infected people in the city of Colombo were infected with the Alpha variant, and according to a note released by Dr. Jeewandara on Twitter, the situation had turned upside down by July 31.
According to the Doctor of Anthropology and Molecular Studies at the University of Jayewardenepura, which provides the most reliable information on the status and prevalence of coronavirus in the country, as of July 31, more than 90% of the COVID infected in Colombo are infected with the Delta variant.
Dr. Chandima Jeewandara pointed out that this is a serious situation that needs to be taken seriously.
