An ancient monastery complex and an extensive system of rock caves dating back to Sri Lanka's early historical period have been discovered in the Wellawaya area.
The cave monastery complex is reportedly located on a large, rocky hill situated between the villages of Alugalge and Siripuragama, within the Wellawaya Divisional Secretariat.
This site of historical significance contains drip-ledged caves, caves with inscriptions, various stone inscriptions from different time periods, rock ponds, ancient brick technology, and other valuable archaeological findings.
The inscriptions reveal that these cave monasteries were prepared and offered to Buddhist monks by regional leaders known as 'Perumaka' during the early historical era.
