For the very first time in Sri Lanka, a cable car service will connect the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Center, famously known for its striking tower, with the Gampola Railway Station, transforming the central hill country’s travel experience.
Amber Adventure (Pvt) Ltd will invest USD 13.25 million in this pioneering venture, while the China National Machinery Industry Corporation (SINOMACH) will serve as the main contractor for the project.
This modern, environmentally friendly cable car system aims to make Ambuluwawa accessible to a wider range of travellers, offering an easier and more affordable way to reach the summit. It will provide not only an adventurous journey for tourists but also a convenient and sustainable transportation option for those who wish to enjoy the breathtaking scenery without a strenuous climb.
The first phase of construction, costing approximately Rs. 1.5 billion, will cover a 1.8-kilometre route from the Ambuluwawa Tower to a midpoint, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The second phase will extend the line from the midpoint to the Gampola Railway Station, at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.6 billion.
Once operational, the Ambuluwawa cable car will symbolize a significant leap forward in Sri Lanka’s tourism infrastructure, integrating innovation, environmental conservation, and community development. It is anticipated to attract between 10% and 15% of the country’s total foreign visitors, elevating Gampola into a vibrant new tourist hotspot and setting a remarkable example of sustainable tourism growth for the region.
