Doctors share tips for a healthy New Year

Adhering to proper health habits during the upcoming New Year season provides the ability to control diseases including diabetes, according to medical specialists.

Specialist Doctor Manilka Sumanatilleke clarified these facts while addressing a press conference held at the Health Promotion Bureau yesterday (8).

He stated that even someone suffering from diabetes can celebrate the New Year happily and following proper procedures for that remains important.

Further expressing views, the doctor stated the following:

"Even a person suffering from diabetes can celebrate the New Year happily with certain limits. I will mention a few small things. A Konda Kavum usually contains only 156 calories. A piece of Aluwa is usually 88 calories. A piece of Kiribath is 320 calories, and a quarter plate of rice contains 30 grams of carbohydrates. Remember these bits. The amount of sugar in the various foods we take is relatively different. By knowing this correctly and preparing your New Year plate properly, you can control it without much impact on the disease. How to do that? You can eat sweets. But take only one type of sweet for one meal. If possible, eat a piece of Aluwa instead of a Kavum. Eat one piece of Kiribath instead of eating two or three. Drink a plain tea without sugar."
