South Korea is "reviewing the US proposal concerning the Strait of Hormuz", the country's foreign ministry says in a statement.
It adds it is "closely monitoring" President Trump's remarks on the vital waterway.
On Monday, South Korea said an investigation was launched after a "suspected strike" on a cargo vessel in the strait, following a reported explosion in the ship's engine room.
Trump later said "perhaps it’s time for South Korea to come and join the mission!"
As a reminder, Trump announced his so-called "Project Freedom" on Sunday which he says aims to "guide" stranded vessels out of the strait.
"Regarding the 'Freedom Project'", the foreign ministry adds, "South Korea and the United States have been maintaining close and ongoing communication on the stable use of key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz."
