The Bharatiya Janata Party prepares to form its first-ever government in West Bengal on May 9, following a landslide victory that ended fifteen years of Trinamool Congress rule. The swearing-in ceremony takes place at 10:00 at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior cabinet members expected to attend. Senior leader Suvendu Adhikari, who secured dual victories in Nandigram and Bhabanipur, says those associated with the previous regime involved in violence face accountability under the new administration.
Tensions remain high across the state as the BJP prepares to elect its legislative party leader on May 8, just one day before the official handover of power. While party workers celebrate the win, Suvendu Adhikari urged restraint, asking supporters to avoid victory rallies until the government officially forms. The BJP leadership also revisited a 2021 promise to return administrative operations to the historic Writers’ Building, though the final decision on the location of the Chief Minister's office rests with the incoming leader.
Meanwhile, outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faces intense criticism from the opposition for her refusal to concede. BJP Member of Parliament Jagdambika Pal says any refusal to resign by the outgoing Chief Minister insults the democratic mandate and violates constitutional norms. These allegations follow a contentious election period where Mamata Banerjee claimed the process involved rigging and the deletion of names from voter rolls, a stance supported by members of the INDIA bloc including Sanjay Raut.
In the assembly, the transition of power begins as the BJP focuses on infrastructure development in its strongholds, promising improvements to healthcare and water supplies. Suvendu Adhikari confirmed he will vacate one of his two winning seats within ten days, pending a final decision from the party high command. The incoming government made clear that its immediate priority involves the restoration of law and order and the investigation of alleged political atrocities committed under the previous administration.
