Sri Lankan pepper attracts a much higher demand in the world market than varieties from Vietnam and Indonesia. Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne stated this in Parliament, pointing out that local pepper prices generally remain higher.
Expressing further views, the deputy minister noted that a consumer needs to chew about four Vietnamese peppercorns just to match the intense pungency of a single Sri Lankan peppercorn. This superior strength ensures that the local product retains a completely distinct demand across the globe.
