Earthquake with magnitude 5.4 units hits Egypt

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale occurred early this morning (03) in the sea off the Egyptian coast, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The centre further stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometres (6 miles) from the earth's surface.

Egyptian authorities later confirmed that the epicenter of the tremor was located 38 kilometres away from the city of Suez.

Foreign media report that the Egyptian Red Crescent activated its emergency response plans for the states where the earthquake was felt.

However, the organisation says no reports of loss of life or property damage caused by the disaster were received so far.
