Deep concern emerged following the cabinet decision published on 27 July 2026 to increase the statutory retirement age of judges in Sri Lanka. The Catholic Bishops' Conference in Sri Lanka highlighted this position in an official statement released on 20 August 2026.
Upholding and safeguarding the independence of the judiciary, the rule of law, and the separation of powers remain of paramount importance at all times. The conference stated that an independent and impartial judiciary acts as an essential safeguard for justice, human dignity, fundamental rights, and the common good of all citizens. Furthermore, any proposed constitutional amendment at this stage must aim directly at strengthening judicial independence.
The church body noted that raising the retirement age must serve to retain experienced judicial officers, effectively address the shortage of judges, and resolve delays in dispensing cases. The statement added that such an exercise requires adequate prior consultation with the public and relevant stakeholders.
The official document contained signatures from Right Reverend Doctor Harold Anthony Perera, President of the organisation, alongside Right Reverend Doctor P. Anton Ranjith, the Secretary General.
