After Maharashtra horror, Delhi Dance teacher jumps into Yamuna over iPhone EMI

A 30-year-old dance teacher allegedly jumped into the Yamuna in southeast Delhi after being unable to pay the EMIs on an iPhone, the police said today.

The Delhi incident happened on Friday, the same day three of a family in Maharashtra died when they fell off a cliff during a standoff over what was claimed to be an argument on paying EMIs on an iPhone. More developments linked to other reasons have surfaced in the Maharashtra case though.

In Delhi, a man identified as Deepak Kumar, was seen struggling in the water, following which a rescue boat was launched towards him. The rescuers grabbed him and took him out of the muddy water.

Before that, Kumar had jumped off a ghat in south Delhi's Kalindi Kunj at 8.30 pm. Some policemen on patrol saw what he did and alerted the rescue team.

Kumar lives in southeast Delhi's Okhla and works as a dance teacher. He also does gardening on the side. He lives with his wife and two children, the police said.

The dance teacher told the police that his income had declined over the past few months, making it difficult for him to pay the monthly installments or EMIs on his iPhone, news agency PTI reported.

It had led to stress and eventually drove him to attempt to die by suicide, the police said. The police counselled Kumar and called his wife and brother-in-law to the police station before sending him home.

In the Maharashtra case, it was first reported that the 18-year-old man was upset with his parents over not being able to pay EMIs on an iPhone. During investigation, more information has surfaced including a video posted on his mother Sangita Chandgude's YouTube channel on relationships and their values, a day before the tragedy.
