Having wrapped up his run on “Andor,” Diego Luna is moving from one part of the Disney empire to another.
The “Star Wars” actor will appear in the the studio’s live action adaptation of “Tangled” alongside Teagan Croft (“Titans”), Milo Manheim (“Zombies”) and Kathryn Hahn (“The Studio”). For those unfamiliar with the 2010 animated feature of the same name, it’s a retelling of the Brothers Grimm fairytale story of Rapunzel, she of the “let down your hair” fame. The original film grossed over $591 million worldwide and spawned a Disney Channel series. Luna will appear in an all-new role that’s been created for the film, but there’s a decent chance his character will appreciate an impressive coiffure.
Michael Gracey, who directed the musical smash “The Greatest Showman,” will direct the feature from a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“I Know What You Did Last Summer”) and Michael Montemayor (“Everyone I Love Is Dead”). Kristin Burr will produce for Burr! Productions and Jessica Virtue, EVP of production, is overseeing the project for Disney Live Action. Filming is set to commence in Spain this June. A release date has not yet been announced.
Luna is an acclaimed actor, director, and producer known for his roles in “Y Tu Mamá También,” “La Máquina” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” His next film, which he directed and co-wrote, “Ashes” is adapted from an acclaimed Spanish-language novel. It will premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. Luna will also star in Netflix’s upcoming “Mexico 86” which tells the true story of a government official, Martin de la Torre, who negotiated Mexico’s hosting of the 1986 World Cup. He also recently wrapped production on the film “Eleven Days,” in which he stars. Luna co-founded the production company La Corriente del Golfo with Gael García Bernal.
Luna is represented by WME and ID PR. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Luna’s casting.
